Night Hike at Primrose Farm

Kick off the new year with a night hike. C'mon outside and enjoy the sounds and smells of the winter night with GSWA's Education Associate, Adam Palmer. (It's always a fun hike with Adam!) Adjacent to Primrose Brook and the Passaic River, Primrose Farm offers wetlands, fields, streams, and forests. This will be an easy, family-friendly hike. Be sure to dress for the weather, and feel free to bring along some water and snacks. Registration is required.

Perhaps you already know and want one of your own. This workshop will be "the bee's knees!" Join us for an evening of building, learning and all-around good fun as we talk about the importance of solitary bees and pollinator habitats to the ecosystem, and build a pollinator box of your own to take home! Due to extreme temperatures and icy trails, this hike is cancelled. To experience similar views and amazing falls, register for our March 31 Paterson Falls Explorer Hike & Tour!   Shadow or no shadow, this Groundhog Day hike is happening! February 2nd is the midpoint of the winter season and a great day to get outside and shake off your winter blues. Rifle Camp Park, located just south of Garret Park in Passaic County, is extensively forested and also the perfect spot to catch stunning views of the Paterson skyline. This is an intermediate hike with some ups and downs, and rocky underfoot. Dress for the weather, hiking shoes strongly recommended. Registration is required.

2/10: Beer and Pizza Pub Quiz

Liven-up Your Sunday Afternoon - Get Your Game On with GSWA!    Show the world (or at least the room) how much you've been paying attention to the environment by putting your knowledge to the test. Compete for bragging rights and fun prizes. And what Pub Quiz would be complete without beer and pizza? We've got you covered. Questions for this Jeopardy-style quiz will range from beginner to expert level. For example: If night active animals are known as nocturnal, what are dawn and dusk active animals known as?  Answer:  Crepuscular Concerned your friends may not be able to join you that day? No problem! Simply register yourself and we will group you together with other enthusiastic players. Contestants must be ages 10 and up. $10 per person gets you food, beer (must be 21+ to consume, IDs will be checked) soft drinks, and snacks. Registration is required so we can make sure we have enough beer, pizza, and prizes. Space is limited - register today or you may be in "jeopardy" of missing out!

POSTPONED: 2/12: Evening Briefing: Green Infrastructure-Managing Stormwater in NJ

Due to the weather that’s happening out there, tonight’s Stormwater Management program has been postponed. We do not yet have a new date, but will announce it as soon as it's scheduled. Everyone be safe! Green infrastructure can win a trifecta of benefits: managing heavy rain and snow, improving water supplies, and enhancing real estate development. Great news: the NJ Department of Environmental Protection is issuing new rules for stormwater management that mandate use of green infrastructure such as bioswales, rain gardens, pervious pavement, tree wells, etc. Learn about these elements of landscape architecture and how they enhance aesthetics, health, and safety from Marian Glenn, Summit Environmental Commission member, and President of the Trustees of the Rahway River Watershed Association.

Learn about the ingredients found in our personal and household cleaning products you may want to avoid, and how products labeled as "environmentally safe" are not all created equal - and why you should be concerned. Common ingredients in many household products can have detrimental environmental impacts on you, our local environment and our regional water supply. 3/6: Frog Watch & CoCoRaHS Training Workshop – Become a Citizen Volunteer

Do you know your spring peepers from your wood frogs?  Have a passion for weather? Hop on over to GSWA Headquarters for this dual, hands-on citizen science program training session where you can become an official FrogWatch and/or CoCoRaHS neighborhood volunteer. Eric Jackson, Environmental Educator at Hartshorn Arboretum, will train you to properly log your frog and toad sightings, which helps establish long-term and large-scale data on amphibian populations. David Robinson of CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network) will teach you to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) joining a network of other backyard weather observers of all ages and backgrounds who do the same in their local communities. This is a free workshop. Registration is required.
