NEW DATE: Sunday, Dec. 9 – Volunteer Work Day at the CMA

Great Swamp Watershed Association's CMA 1 Tiger Lily Ln, Morristown, NJ, United States

For safety reasons, we have rescheduled this work day to Sunday, December 9, 9am-12pm at the CMA (83 Tiger Lily Lane, Morristown NJ). The trails will be closed Saturday, December 8  for the last day of shotgun hunting season as part of the deer management program. We apologize for the inconvenience.   Come help us maintain and improve our 73-acre Conservation Management Area. Tasks will include trail maintenance, fence repair, and invasive plant removal. Lighter tasks will also be available. Bring your best energy and enthusiasm! Conditions may be wet or muddy. Long pants, sturdy shoes or boots are encouraged. We’ll bring the coffee and donuts to help fuel you along. Participants under 14 must be accompanied by a parent - community service hours can be earned for your school. Registration is required. Lower Passaic River Superfund Update

Winter Nature Detectives Discovery Hike

Set off in hot pursuit of the region’s most-wanted wintertime wildlife on this nature detectives discovery hike at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Learn how to identify animals from their tracks, scats, and other clues. Spy on secret hideouts used by birds, wintering insects, and other woodland creatures. Unmask the dining preferences of deer, raccoons, and even coyotes by putting a magnifying glass to some scat. All this detective work is easier than you think. And let’s face it, it’s fun being outdoors in the winter! Recommended for all, but especially children 5 to 12 years old. Registration is required. Night Hike at Primrose Farm

Kick off the new year with a night hike. C'mon outside and enjoy the sounds and smells of the winter night with GSWA's Education Associate, Adam Palmer. (It's always a fun hike with Adam!) Adjacent to Primrose Brook and the Passaic River, Primrose Farm offers wetlands, fields, streams, and forests. This will be an easy, family-friendly hike. To experience similar views and amazing falls, register for our March 31 Paterson Falls Explorer Hike & Tour!   Shadow or no shadow, this Groundhog Day hike is happening! February 2nd is the midpoint of the winter season and a great day to get outside and shake off your winter blues. Rifle Camp Park, located just south of Garret Park in Passaic County, is extensively forested and also the perfect spot to catch stunning views of the Paterson skyline. This is an intermediate hike with some ups and downs, and rocky underfoot. Dress for the weather, hiking shoes strongly recommended. Registration is required.

Liven-up Your Sunday Afternoon - Get Your Game On with GSWA!    Show the world (or at least the room) how much you've been paying attention to the environment by putting your knowledge to the test. Compete for bragging rights and fun prizes. And what Pub Quiz would be complete without beer and pizza? We've got you covered. Questions for this Jeopardy-style quiz will range from beginner to expert level. For example: If night active animals are known as nocturnal, what are dawn and dusk active animals known as?  Answer:  Crepuscular Concerned your friends may not be able to join you that day? No problem! Simply register yourself and we will group you together with other enthusiastic players. Contestants must be ages 10 and up. $10 per person gets you food, beer (must be 21+ to consume, IDs will be checked) soft drinks, and snacks. POSTPONED: 2/12: Evening Briefing: Green Infrastructure-Managing Stormwater in NJ

Due to the weather that’s happening out there, tonight’s Stormwater Management program has been postponed. We do not yet have a new date, but will announce it as soon as it's scheduled. Everyone be safe! Green infrastructure can win a trifecta of benefits: managing heavy rain and snow, improving water supplies, and enhancing real estate development. Great news: the NJ Department of Environmental Protection is issuing new rules for stormwater management that mandate use of green infrastructure such as bioswales, rain gardens, pervious pavement, tree wells, etc. Learn about these elements of landscape architecture and how they enhance aesthetics, health, and safety from Marian Glenn, Summit Environmental Commission member, and President of the Trustees of the Rahway River Watershed Association.
