As part of its water quality and stewardship mission, Great Swamp Watershed Association owns and manages 73 acres of forested wetlands in Harding Township, known as the Conservation Management Area (CMA) and located within Great Swamp watershed. This property is part of a developing open space greenway upstream of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Morris County, NJ. Our goal is to restore the property to increase its biological diversity, making it a better place for animals to live, and consequently a better place for individuals to come and observe wildlife. In order to manage the CMA, we rely heavily on the generosity of volunteers. Over 2,000 volunteer hours are logged annually at this and other GSWA sites. 95% of our land management comes from corporate work groups who, through their philanthropy or team building events, contribute a day of work at our site to help us towards fulfilling our mission. Come help us maintain and improve our 73-acre Conservation Management Area. Tasks will include trail maintenance, fence repair, and invasive plant removal. Lighter tasks will also be available. Bring your best energy and enthusiasm! Conditions may be wet or muddy. Long pants and sturdy shoes or boots are encouraged. We’ll bring the coffee and donuts to help fuel you along. Participants under 14 must be accompanied by a parent - community service hours can be earned for your school. Registration is required. Can’t make this date? No worries – we will also conduct CMA volunteer work days on October 13, November 10, and December 8, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Pick a date that works best for you!

Rolling Knolls Landfill Superfund Update & Meeting

Come join us for an update from the EPA on the status of the Rolling Knolls Landfill in Green Village, Chatham Township. We are looking for a few good men and women to participate in a Community Advisory Group (CAG). As discussed in the cover article, the CAG will provide a public forum for the community to discuss their concerns and offer input to the EPA on the cleanup as it moves forward. Create Your Own Walking Stick

Learn how to make your very own walking stick so you can hit the trails with confidence. Retired science teacher turned walking-stick-guru, Brad Koller, leads a fun-filled DIY workshop where you will choose from a variety of rough sticks including red cedar, maple, beech, and iron wood, and walk away with a finished product - and the ability to create one on your own! Natural and Cultural History of Jockey Hollow Then and Now

Change of Colors Hike

October is the perfect time to head outdoors and check out all the vibrant colors of autumn, and Garret Mountain Reservation is the place to be. GSWA Education Associate, Adam Palmer, will take you on a journey through the trails of Garret Mountain and help identify the many varieties of trees and plants as they begin to prepare for a long winter’s nap. Situated 500 feet above sea level, Garret Mountain Reservation offers several overlooks with panoramic views of northern New Jersey and New York City that you can't see from anywhere else in Passaic County.
