GSWA Education Associate, Adam Palmer, will take you on a journey through the trails of Jockey Hollow and identify the many varieties of trees and plants as they begin to prepare for a long winter’s nap. We will also talk about how winter will change this landscape and how it might have looked like for the Continental Army soldiers who were stationed there during the winter of 1779-1780. Note: Advance registration is required, space is limited to 8 people. No walk-ins. Also, please “go before you go” as there are no available restrooms at the site. COVID-19 safety protocols: Programs are offered subject to current advisory status from the Governor’s office. Grab your warm clothes and kick off the holiday season with a homemade winter wreath made from native evergreens and other native plants. You’ll decorate your masterpiece with pinecones, berries, and other items found in nature. While your creativity blossoms, you’ll learn more about the natural items being used in this craft. Hot cider will be served. GSWA members $30, non-members $35. Price covers everything you need to leave with a finished piece that’s ready to hang on your door or give as a gift. While it’s a difficult time to shop, this outdoor event offers a safe, socially distant opportunity to do something crafty.   Masks are mandatory and social distancing will be enforced. Space is limited so registration is required.

Late Fall Hike at Jockey Hollow

Before the holiday rush begins, c'mon on out and join GSWA staff member Adam Palmer for an informative and fun "nature" hike through Jockey Hollow. Feel the leaves crunch under your feet and breathe in the fresh autumn air as we walk the trails. While people of all ages are welcome, we encourage our younger members and non-members to come out and meet other people and peers interested in the environment and learn some cool facts about the area! GSWA's Adam Palmer will take you on a tour of our Conservation Management Area at our annual post-Thanksgiving hike. Come see the forest critters as they prepare for winter, and check out the amazing ecological renovations that have taken place here in the last several weeks. Staff and volunteers have also been busy adding more boardwalks so it's even easier to navigate our many trails. So, come take advantage of this break between holidays with a taste of nature. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you for it! Limit: 8 people.

We’ve got the solution - 3 nature-themed DIY projects for your child to keep or give away: 1) Hanging pinecone suet birdfeeder; 2) Decorated muslin produce and/or gift bag for use at the grocery store or as a gift bag; 3) Easy-make pollinator box (no sawing) to attract native bees to your yard. Brown paper will be on-hand to wrap the gifts. Hot chocolate and snacks available for the children. GSWA members $20, non-members $25.
