Stream Assessment Training (Virtual Event)

Interested in the health of your local stream? Concerned about clean water? Perhaps you've even considered becoming a stream monitoring volunteer. If any this makes you raise an eyebrow, this free virtual training session is for you! And it's easier than trying to say the tongue-twister above. Sandra LaVigne, GSWA Director of Water Quality Programs, will join you virtually to teach you how to conduct visual and biological stream assessments and recognize environmental factors that may impact stream health. By the end of the hour, you will have the skills you need to conduct your own assessments for fun or as a visual stream assessment volunteer! (Preferred volunteers are 15 or older.) Bring Your Best Friend on a Dog Hike

Calling all pooches! Grab your family and a leash, and c’mon out to the CMA for a relaxing Fall hike. We know you’re ready to get some fresh air and sniff new smells. This is your day! We only ask that you play nice with other dogs and remain on your leash for the full hike. Ask your humans to bring you some water in case you get thirsty, and come prepared to clean up anything you may leave behind. Due to COVID-19, there is a limit of 8 people so shake a leg (any leg) and have your person register today! Note: Advance registration is required, space is limited to 8 people. No walk-ins. Also, please “go before you go” as there are no available restrooms at the site. COVID-19 safety protocols: Programs are offered subject to current advisory status from the Governor’s office. GSWA Education Associate, Adam Palmer, will take you on a journey through the trails of Jockey Hollow and identify the many varieties of trees and plants as they begin to prepare for a long winter’s nap. We will also talk about how winter will change this landscape and how it might have looked like for the Continental Army soldiers who were stationed there during the winter of 1779-1780. You’ll decorate your masterpiece with pinecones, berries, and other items found in nature. While your creativity blossoms, you’ll learn more about the natural items being used in this craft. Hot cider will be served. GSWA members $30, non-members $35. Price covers everything you need to leave with a finished piece that’s ready to hang on your door or give as a gift. While it’s a difficult time to shop, this outdoor event offers a safe, socially distant opportunity to do something crafty.   Masks are mandatory and social distancing will be enforced. Space is limited so registration is required.

Late Fall Hike at Jockey Hollow

GSWA's Adam Palmer will take you on a tour of our Conservation Management Area at our annual post-Thanksgiving hike. Come see the forest critters as they prepare for winter, and check out the amazing ecological renovations that have taken place here in the last several weeks. Staff and volunteers have also been busy adding more boardwalks so it's even easier to navigate our many trails. So, come take advantage of this break between holidays with a taste of nature. Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in New Jersey, we have cancelled this event.   Kids feeling crafty? We’ve got the solution - 3 nature-themed DIY projects for your child to keep or give away: 1) Hanging pinecone suet birdfeeder; 2) Decorated muslin produce and/or gift bag for use at the grocery store or as a gift bag; 3) Easy-make pollinator box (no sawing) to attract native bees to your yard. Brown paper will be on-hand to wrap the gifts. Hot chocolate and snacks available for the children. GSWA members $20, non-members $25.
