About Us:
Great Swamp Watershed Association is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to improving the land and water resources of the Passaic River region through water quality monitoring, land preservation and environmental stewardship, education and outreach, and community engagement. We seek an experienced and passionate Executive Director to lead our organization into its next chapter.
Position Overview:
The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Trustees to oversee daily operations, strategic initiatives, and overall management of the organization. This role is pivotal in shaping the future direction of our association and ensuring we meet our mission effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- Development (30%): In conjunction with the development team, cultivate and solicit members, individual major donors, and grants, as well as contribute to fundraising events. Network and build relationships in the community.
- Advocacy and Land Preservation (35%): Represent the organization at public meetings, interact with officials and regulators, lead efforts in land acquisition, stewardship, and key projects such as new office acquisition.
- Education and Outreach (10%): Promote community awareness and engagement through educational initiatives.
- Water Quality Programs (10%): Work with Director of Water Quality programs to implement programs focused on enhancing and protecting water quality.
- Administration (15%): Conduct meetings with staff, review plans and programs, oversee financial management and budget preparation, personnel, and coordinate with the Board of Trustees and Advisory Council.
Specific Tasks Include:
- Manage organizational staffing, fiscal oversight, and programming.
- Network and consistently establish and maintain relationships with donors and other stakeholders. Solicit funds from major donors. Be the representative of the organization at community meetings and interface with elected officials and regulatory agencies.
- Work with the Director of Finance to propose and secure Board approval for an annual budget along with continual assessment of revenue and expenses to ensure adherence to the budget.
- Partner with the Board to create and implement a Strategic Plan guiding the association’s long-term activities.
Run regular staff meetings, conduct annual staff performance reviews, and review program activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher. Advanced degree preferred.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Strong ability to connect with diverse stakeholders, including staff, donors, and community members.
- Preferable to have environmental nonprofit experience and/or care about environmental issues.
- Familiarity with the region and its community dynamics.
- A gregarious personality with problem-solving skills, fiscal conservatism, and business acumen.
